Braxton's Eagle Project

This great kid did a nice Eagle project, especially considering the amount of work.  First, he had researched and found "Giant Steps", an organization that educates and helps out individuals and families of those with autism.  Braxton (after 3 months) got it approved to hold a book drive and build book shelves.  To follow up, he was going to hold a special read-in with the youth group at our church with the students.  Then we broke the news that we were moving and life went in fast forward.  We were not able to complete that project.

So, living in Idaho…we were struggling finding out what we could do for his project.  Finally, I went to the scout office and just asked if there were some references we could have (because we just don't know people) and sure enough, they said that just that morning, the head of the American Red Cross had come in begging for a scout to host a blood drive.  We both felt our prayers had been answered.  Little did we know the anxiety and stress this would cause over the next month.

Braxton prepared a 10 minute presentation along with a guest speaker (our Bishop who is the head of the ER at the local hospital) about the need for donating blood, how to prepare, answers to commonly asked questions, etc.  He gave this at a humanitarian day held at our ward building.

Here he is holding the Heartland Blood Center calendar where Lizzie and I were featured for the month of July because of my birth story.
He then worked his tail off giving at least 5 other presentations around the community and training other scouts on what to say and how to ask for donors in 9 different wards.  He also scheduled volunteers to work in 6 different areas through the day of the blood drive.
Some were in the nursery

Others could work the snack station, check-in, running between stations, or walkers who escort the donors from the beds to the recovery tables.
Mrs. Gladstone from the Red Cross came by to check on him and see how everything was going.
This was the welcoming party
Barb was one of our first donors.
After checking in, the volunteers would wait to go through the questions with the Red Cross.  These chairs were full almost the whole time!

Rick Wallis was a key player in helping remove my stress and assisting Braxton.  He is his teachers' quorum leader and knows everyone in Idaho Falls.  After Braxton and Steve and spent 12 hours asking for snack donations for 3 days and getting all "No's" except for 2 cases of waters, Rick cashed in on a few IOUs with some buddies who owned convenience stores and got Gatorades and Juices for us.
He was my saving grace through this whole ordeal.

Our donors were of all ages!  This manly senior football player was such a good sport to do this!

One of the requirements was to have a Thank You treat to hand out to all donors, volunteers, and employees of the Red Cross.

Bro. Fuhrman thought this would be hilarious.
Deacons could help set up and take down and count it towards their own volunteer hours.

Here's one of the many convenience stores who said No.

How could they resist him?  They all blamed the economy.  Thank goodness we were allowed to have homemade treats and that the Relief Society ROCKS!  20 different women donated cookies, crackers, fruit, chex mix, cheese, yogurts, etc.  We had the best snacks!

Overall, we are just glad to have it OVER!  Braxton had 50 units donated and 69 volunteers check in the computer system.  We were told 50 is what was required in order to "count" as a completed project.  Later, we were told that it was all a misunderstanding and that really he only needed 50 signed up.  Nice.  Oh, well.  We were praying for 50 units and God delivered on our plea.  All of the workers had told Braxton that it was one of the best run blood drives they had ever been to and that they would stand up for him if necessary.  How kind!

Happy Halloween 2013

For Halloween, we had...

Wolverine

Taylor Swift--in fact, Emma would even perform at the door and sing "22" when anyone would ask her who she was.

Shoulder Angel
From Studio C, of course!

And a Cowgirl!

Here are all 3 who were still dressed up at night.  Evan had a party where he got 2nd in the pumpkin carving contest and 2nd in the costume contest, but ripped it up on the dance floor!

This is pretty good, if I do say so myself!

Bird Family Reunion

Now that we are living near Steve's parents AND his sister (Rexburg), we only needed one more piece to complete our puzzle. :)  Julene and her kids decided to come down when the weather was nice in the fall and not brave our winters.  Ryan could only make it for 2 days, but we were thrilled to have him as long as we did.  We ate some good food, talked, laughed, cried, and had a little fun.

At the park, I started taking pictures of the kids and a sweet lady offered to allow me to jump in.  Notice our surprise when Lynette handed out t-shirts for each and every one of us!  They all say "Birds of a feather, flock together" on the back.  This was a pretty momentous occasion as we had not been together for a few years.

Check out this line of posterity!
  Cute cousins
A trip to the zoo--to check out other birds :)
Grandpa always gives the funniest reactions!

After the zoo, we all got dressed up and coordinated and headed out to this awesome barn for some photo opportunities.

I love these girls!

Marilyn and her 2 daughters
We really had a good time and are looking forward to doing it again.  I am a lucky lady to have married into this good family.  Let's hope it won't take years before the next time we do it again.
We miss you, Julene!

Fall in Idaho 2013

Our Fall in Idaho started out similarly to our other falls.  Cooler nights, school, soccer, and football.
Lizzie's skills really improved as she became one of the key players on her team scoring up to 4 goals in one game!

Evan's experience was not the greatest.  He was not played much (despite the rules) and right as the coaches claimed to see him putting his heart into it, he rebroke his collarbone, putting him out for the latter half of the season.

Emma got some exercise and met some new girls.
Carter also played and is getting better all the time!  He found a great team and a great coach that pushes him.  They were undefeated!

Schools:
Evan is in 8th grade at the Middle School

Carter is in 6th, not at the middle school, but even at the "overflow" elementary school.
Needless to say, he's not thrilled.  He does go to the zoned school on Wednesdays, though, when he has PACE (the gifted and talented program).

Emma's in 3rd and she got into the school with the kids in our neighborhood and ward.  She loves school and loves her teacher.

Lizzie's in 1st grade and is also bumped to the overflow elementary.  Her teacher loves her. :)  I'm glad Carter is with her.  The only sad thing is that her teacher (whom I really like) is looping to 2nd grade with the same class and the new school will be completed by then.  We'll have a difficult decision to make as to which school to have Lizzie attend for next year.

Steve and I had the marvelous opportunity to go to Utah for a weekend and see James Taylor perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir...

 Have a Black & Tan at Leatherby's...

and attend the best BYU football game ever! (?) [If not the best, it was definitely one of the best.  We beat U of Texas!] It was delayed for over an hour because of a crazy storm that blew through the valley. We hung out with David and Donna and their daughter Cassidy and grabbed some dinner as well as headed over to Shopko to buy garbage bags for ponchos and sweatshirts.

Without a garden, we didn't get to harvest much; however, we did pick some corn from the leftovers at the church's farm,
got a few baskets full of plums off our tree
and even gleaned a few potatoes from a lovely family in Shelley!

Evan had a birthday--14th.  These kids keep getting older! This poor guy has his birthday in the middle of all the fall chaos!  I decided to surprise him with a few minions.  It put a smile on his face!
My Evan is growing taller and taller.  He is now about the same height as I am, in size 29x32 pants (tall and SKINNY), and his voice cannot figure out which octave to be in.  His musical abilities continue to impress as he is still singing in choir, playing the cello and piano and guitar.  He got a solo at his school choir concert singing the falsetto part to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and killed it.  He is a funny, bright kid with unique interests, and loads of talent.  We just hope we can funnel it the right way. :)  In turning 14 and going to his first dance, he had one of the best nights of his life.  He said waiting a month for the next one would feel like a lifetime.  I love this kid and the joy he brings!
